The Brave browser has integrated a decentralized file hosting solution called IPFS, allowing users to access media more conveniently.

The Privacy-focused Brave internet browser has integrated the Interplanetary File System (IPFS). Announced on Jan. 19, Brave aims to push the industry one step closer to a fully decentralized web. The new integration is currently available on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

The development marks the first major browser to integrate IPFS. Users can access content by resolving the ipfs:// address via a gateway or installing a full IPFS node.

The IPFS team said that it facilitates a change in power dynamics, giving users more say in the internet’s architecture. The team claims that it will add support for Brave’s Android browser in the near future.

IPFS is a peer-to-peer file sharing and distribution system, somewhat similar to software like BitTorrent.

The decentralized nature offers touted benefits of the asset class — better security, efficiency, and cheaper costs. Specifically, users would have less to worry about concerning downtime, censorship, costs, and connectivity.

Brave Targets A More Free and Fair Web

Brave CTO Brian Bondy was forthright when speaking about the improvements it would bring,

“IPFS gives users a solution to the problem of centralized servers creating a central point of failure for content access… Providing Brave’s 1 million+ verified content creators with the power to seamlessly serve content to millions of new users across the globe via a new and secure protocol”

Censorship and privacy have been two major concerns across the world as it barrels into a new digital era. Several incidents of compromised personal data and the wanton application of censorship has sparked outrage in many countries. While it’s a complicated legal issue, the crypto industry has focused on building resistant, usable solutions.

Brave is only one of the many projects that have attempted to consistently add features to prepare itself for the Web 3.0 age. Some of its best features arrived last year, which helped it cross 24 million active monthly users.

Brave Focused on Adding More Features

Brave, which prides itself on its strong privacy features, has experienced tremendous growth for the past 18 or so months. Brendan Eich, CEO of Brave, has made several earnest remarks concerning the drawbacks of the current centralized systems.

On its part, Brave has implemented many new features to give users a more robust, but private, experience.

In October 2020, Brave’s websites and browser became available on Tor, a strong move for privacy. It has also worked on increasing the utility of the Basic Attention Token (BAT), supporting tipping for Reddit and Vimeo.

As for what’s under development, the Brave team released an update on its decentralized ad protocol Themis. The research initiative is expected to bring about a revolution to online advertising models.

#Metoo (sort of)

When the #metoo movement began, I wrote an article, yelled on social media, and attended my local Women’s March. Satisfied with my contribution, I placed my attention elsewhere. And then our elected representatives confirmed a man for the US Supreme Court who, without even taking into account his guilt or innocence, has no place seated on that tribunal.

Metoo, sort of…

When the #metoo movement began, I wrote an article, yelled on social media, and attended my local Women’s March. But that’s it. I assumed that this problem would take care of itself. And then our elected representatives placed a man on the US Supreme Court who, without even taking into account his guilt or innocence, has no place seated on that tribunal.
