Levi Strauss $ Co announced a collaboration with Harvard University and New America think tank to develop a blockchain factory system. The information was released by Reuters on January 24.

According to Reuters, the system will be replacing external factory health and safety auditors with a self-reporting infrastructure by the workers. As Dr. Eileen McNeely, the director of Harvard T.H. Chan’s Sustainability and Health Initiative for NetPositive Enterprise explained that several audits monitor the work that is performed in the supply chain industry. This blockchain system offers a new innovative solution for companies.

At the moment, there are three Levi Strauss’ factories in Mexico that have around 5,000 workers. These factories are going to implement the system throughout this year. Meanwhile, in 2020, there will be another pilot related to this project.

This new system is going to put an annual safety survey on the blockchain that will be using an index previously developed by the Harvard T.H Chan School of Public Health. In this way, the results of that survey are not going to be manipulated in any way, providing better and more accurate information regarding the processes in these factories.

ConsenSys will be developing the blockchain behind it. In order to fund this development, the United States State Department is providing funds to the parties involved.

ConsenSys is one of the most popular companies that are working with blockchain technology around the world. The firm has been founded by Joseph Lubin, the co-founder of Ethereum (ETH), the third largest cryptocurrency and blockchain network in the market.

A few weeks ago, there were several reports that said that ConsenSys wanted to lay off between 50 and 60 percent of the employees working at the company. Nevertheless, it announced that it was going to be cutting just 10 percent of its workforce.
