South Korea To Host Hackathon To Discover Blockchain Uses In Society

South Korea has recently taken a deeper dive at blockchain technology, as an announcement regarding a hackathon was revealed on Monday, August 27 via local news outlet, Money Today. The efforts are jointly made, consisting of both the Korea Internet and Security Agency (KISA) and Korea Internet Promotion Agency (KIPA). The duo trusts the hackathon is a great setting to brainstorm concepts as to how blockchain can positively influence the general public.

KISA and KIPA have decided that it would be ideal to schedule the event during the same week in which ‘2018’s Blockchain Promotion Week’ is being celebrated (i.e. November 26 to 30). As for the ‘general public’ aspect of the contest, contenders will be asked to assess ways in which current societal issues can be resolved and how the tech’s uses can further ameliorate both private and public sectors.

No particular requirement has been set, however, an application deadline has been confirmed as September 28, 2018. The winning team with the most effective idea will supposedly receive 17 awards given by prestigious individuals and firms including the Minister of Science and Technology, the Minister of Information and Communication, and the President of the Korea Internet Promotion Agency to name a few. In addition, a prize offer is also in place, which is valued at about USD$90,000.

Director of KIPA, Kim Seok-hwan, sees this event as a stepping stone towards making “an innovative change in people’s lives,” adding that one’s participation is equivalent to a great deal of contribution.

South Korea’s approach towards acquiring blockchain knowledge is distinctive, as other countries have simply formed a group or passed over the responsibility to a third party to provide research-backed use cases. A contest is not only motivating for contenders, but also allow participants to learn more about the technology at hand via the ideas conceived by others.
