Aelf AMA Gives New Details on Performance and Governance for their Blockchain OS

2018-8-13 20:42

Ma Haobo, the founder of the cloud computing blockchain Aelf, answered questions during a Reddit AMA yesterday. Aelf is sometimes described as the Linux of blockchains, and is meant to work as an “operating system” that can offer intensive support for dApp development and execution. During the AMA, Ma Haobo focused on Aelf’s three main goals: superior performance, improved resource segregation, and better governance compared to other blockchains.

Performance and Resource Allocation

To improve performance, Aelf is using parallel computing, server-level technology, and distributed frameworks. According to Ma Haobo, this enables the Aelf team “to a good job of programming, which brings a lot of performance improvements.”

As for resource isolation, the founder explained that the project makes heavy use of multi-level sidechains and that “that each chain only deals with one thing.” If Aelf were Ethereum, for example, it would have one sidechain for CryptoKitties, one for decentralized exchanges and so on. If one chain is overloaded, it will not affect the performance of the others—a problem Ethereum currently suffers from.

Sidechains are similar to sharding, another scalability solution that Ma Haobo weighed in on.

“You may think that sharding is very powerful, but it is essentially partitioning, and the core problem with it is that we cannot put it in the original database domain,” said Ma.

Conversely, Ethereum’s Vitalik Buterin has in turn criticized some types of sidechain for requiring too much trust from users.

“In a federated sidechain you have to trust the federation; with sharding you don’t,” said Buterin.

Governance

Moving on to the topic of governance, Ma Haobo cited the divisive rollback following the failure of Ethereum’s DAO as a problem Aelf is trying to avoid. He criticized the fact that community conflicts can prevent solutions.

“The blockchain network does not belong to any company or individual. In this case, the inability to update the code is a big problem. This problem determines the development direction of a blockchain network.”

Ma did not describe Aelf’s exact governance structure during the AMA, but it has been indicated on the project’s GitHub page that Aelf runs on a DPoS consensus mechanism for reasons of permanence and scalability. This will give a few delegates the power to make decisions, but those delegates will be changed often.

No Talk of ‘Candy’

It is also noteworthy that the AMA disallowed questions about Aelf’s airdrop and reward system, “Candy”, which gives away tokens to users in exchange for completing tasks. This decision was likely intended to discourage referral trains, a practice that led Reddit to ban the OracleChain subreddit. Although referral rewards are controversial practices due to their similarity to Ponzi schemes, they are quite commonplace, and it is rare to see a project downplay its own offer and maintain its integrity in this way.
