Retail giant Walmart Inc. is taking new strides in the world of blockchain as it has applied for a new patent with the US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO). The company has created a blockchain-based system that underpins a robotic workforce that could work for deliveries and can be used in the company’s supply chain. Details about the project were revealed in the patent document released on Aug. 30.

What Does the New Patent Contain?

The patent focuses on a technology used for “in-field authenticating of autonomous electronic devices” that could ensure security in the company’s deliveries. To explain further, the patent states:

“[I]n exemplary embodiments, two autonomous electronic devices, such as delivery drones or household autonomous robots, can authenticate each other using embodiments of security procedures described herein.”

The Arkansas-based company filed for the patent in January 2018 under the name “Systems, Devices, and Methods for In-Field Authenticating of Autonomous Robots.”

The system can be used for operating several drones or robots that can operate on wireless signals. The underpinning technology of this network will be blockchain, which will allow secure authentication of the electronic devices’ identities.

The first authentication signal used in this technology will include the first blockchain key and the second authentication signal will include the second blockchain key. The combination of these two keys will be used to determine the identity of the two “mobile autonomous electronic devices.” The first device will be configured to access the distributed ledger database and confirm the identity of the second device, as explained in the patent.

Why Depend on Blockchain?

Walmart intends to keep its network secure from hackers who could manipulate data and tamper with security measures. The use of blockchain will be helpful in the recording of authentication data and signals, which are the hackers’ targets. The document explains further:

“Updates to the blockchain may comprise authentication signals or identification information, and one or more nodes on the system may be configured to incorporate one or more updates into blocks to add to the distributed database.”

The company has previously applied for numerous blockchain-related patents in the US. The rise in the number of Walmart’s patents shows that it wants to stay relevant and competitive when rivals like Amazon are slowly creeping into every arena of retail.

One of the company’s most recent patent application was for a system managing smart appliances using blockchain, which could allow users to customize their levels of access to the appliance. Previous to this, the company patented a technology that could create powerful delivery management systems based on blockchain technology. This could help in keeping delivered items secure until customers receive them.
