Volkswagen created the Networking for Autonomous Vehicles (NAV) Alliance in partnership with four major suppliers of components — Nvidia, Continental, Bosch, and Aquantia. The alliance aims to bring a standardized approach to the market and to make simpler the complex back-end work required to bring autonomous cars to the market on a large scale. The alliance hopes to bring more auto manufacturers to work on autonomous vehicles (AV) eventually.

Teamwork is the key to bringing standardization in the AV sector. If multiple companies work on similar systems in parallel, it could be a waste of time and money. However, collaborating on a single standardized platform would help in bringing vehicles to the road with less difficulty.

The first thing the alliance would like to standardize is high bandwidth data transfer. Various sensors in a car keep sending multiterabytes of data, which should be processed quickly to help the vehicle make the right decisions. Aquantia can really help bring this high-speed, high-bandwidth data transferability to the vehicles.

Gary Hicok, senior vice president at Nvidia, commented:

“Autonomous vehicles require an onboard AI supercomputer, architected for functional safety, capable of processing vast amounts of sensor data through redundant and diverse deep neural networks and algorithms.”

The NAV Alliance is also hoping to establish procedures that could help improve the security and reliability of their systems. Also, they aim to educate the public about the processes needed to bring an AV to the road.

The senior vice president of body electronics at Bosch, Viktor Molnar, said:

“Together with our alliance partners, we are therefore contributing to the creation of a standardized network that is safe, reliable and redundant, and helping bring autonomous driving to our roads.”
