Talarico Draws Even With Paxton in Texas Senate Prediction Markets as New Poll Flips the Race

Prediction markets have caught up to the media hype, and Texas is no longer trading like a safe Republican Senate seat on prediction markets.

Democratic State Rep. James Talarico, who entered the general election race as a long shot against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, has now drawn even with the Republican candidate on prediction markets after a new poll gave him a four-point lead.

That is a major shift from just a few months ago. Paxton had held the market edge since knocking off longtime Sen. John Cornyn in the GOP primary, and Republicans were once trading as high as an 80% favorite to retain the seat on Kalshi.

Even at the start of August, Paxton was still near 60%. Now Talarico has climbed to 51% on Kalshi, with $7.8 million traded, and pulled even on Polymarket, where about $680,000 has traded.

The latest Texas Pulse/Texas A&M Bush School poll has Talarico ahead 47% to 43%, a four-point advantage that remains within the survey’s 4.7-point margin of error.

Still, it is the fourth recent public poll to show Talarico ahead or effectively tied, and it points to a real change in the electorate: independents favored Talarico by 23 points, up from a 14-point edge in June.

A Texas Southern University survey released earlier in the week also put Talarico ahead, 47% to 45%, with his strongest support coming from younger voters, women, Latino voters and Black voters. That doesn’t make Texas a Democratic lock. It does mean that the market’s move isn’t just hype around an ascendant candidate, it is following a polling picture that has become consistently more uncomfortable for Paxton.

Paxton has acknowledged that Republicans are facing a difficult midterm environment, an unusual admission from a candidate running statewide in Texas. The market is now reflecting that same concern. This is no longer a question of whether Talarico can make the race competitive.

Senate-control math changes

The stakes go well beyond Texas. Democrats have a narrow path to Senate control, and that starts with protecting their vulnerable or open seats in battleground states like Michigan and Georgia. Michigan, in particular, has become less comfortable as Republican Mike Rogers is polling well against Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed, even though prediction markets still give Democrats a modest edge there.

If Michigan becomes a Republican pickup with Democratic Sen. Gary Peters retiring, Democrats need a way to replace it. Texas is one of the few plausible opportunities big enough to do that. A Talarico win would not erase the need to defend the rest of the map, but it would give Democrats an unexpected route to the majority that hardly existed when the 2026 midterm election cycle began.

That’s why a 50–50 market in Texas is such a consequential number. The state is not supposed to be part of a potential Democratic Senate path. But if Talarico can turn a close poll into a sustained lead, it goes from stretch target to a central piece of the 2026 majority math.

Paxton’s electability problem

National Republicans worried about this exact scenario the minute Paxton beat Cornyn. Cornyn had held the seat since 2002 and had the backing of much of the Texas and Washington GOP establishment, while Paxton entered the general election with a far more polarizing profile and a primary that had already drained party resources.

Before the runoff, GOP officials and donors warned that a Paxton victory could force Republicans to spend heavily in Texas, diverting money from more traditional battlegrounds and potentially weighing on down-ballot races. Cornyn was widely regarded inside the party as the safer general-election choice, while Talarico’s numbers were already stronger against Paxton than against the incumbent.

President Donald Trump’s endorsement got Paxton through the primary, but it did not make the general election risk disappear. If anything, the current polling is validating the argument Republicans made all spring privately: Paxton was the stronger MAGA candidate, but Cornyn may have been the more electable one.

What traders are pricing now

Kalshi’s $7.8 million market has become the cleanest real-time read on that reversal. Talarico reaching 51% is not a landslide call, but prediction markets saying the race has crossed from “Republican hold” into coin-flip territory.

Polymarket’s roughly $680,000 market is moving in the same direction, giving the shift more credibility even though its liquidity is far smaller.

The question is whether Talarico can hold the move. Texas remains structurally difficult for Democrats, Paxton still has Trump’s backing, and there is plenty of time for national Republicans to consolidate around their nominee. But for now, the race that began with Paxton as the safe side is trading like one of the most important, and volatile, Senate contests in the country.
