Philippines Turn to Blockchain and Crypto to Rehabilitate its Rivers

The PPRC (Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission), an agency mandated with cleaning up the Pasig River, signed an MOU with Cypher Odin, a local blockchain company, in a bid to restore the heath of the 27-kilometer polluted river.

The CEO of Cypher Odin, Mariano Villafuerte IV, had this to say:

“There are so many opportunities and so many things we could do to help clean up the river. We can make Pasig like the River Thames where nightlife is vibrant or where people can enjoy water adventures like river dining and cruises. There are so many things that can be done, the possibilities are endless,” said Mariano Villafuerte IV, “CEO of Cypher Odin.”

Cypher Odin will deploy Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) and Internet of Things (IoT) devices that will constantly monitor the quality of the water as well as tide levels and other relevant data points, and the information will be accessed via a peer-to-peer inter-agency platform, proving more consistency, transparency and accountability for stakeholders.

In addition to this, the company plans to launch BOTcoin, a digital currency which will be used to reward companies and communities that are contributing to the clean-up. Villafuerte noted that:

“This initiative will be funded by cryptocurrency. Through BOTcoin, we plan on following a Smart City approach, which will create even smarter citizens. The Smart River Initiative will put the Philippines on the forefront of creating solutions and POC’s for Smart Islands and Smart Cities. This pilot program will be a framework for solutions to problems in waste management, afforestation, clean water, marine transport and don’t forget about retrieving lost remnants of our culture.”

Villafuerte hopes to create more similar partnerships with relevant agencies within the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) including the Laguna Lake Development, involving all stakeholders when it comes to protecting the water bodies in the country.

The CEO of Cypher Odin believes that the raw data collected from the Pasig River will be processed and conclusively analysed, turning the information to the government and academia, who will then take up steps to help them come up with a more permanent solution to the pollution issue afflicting the water body.
