New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced that a blockchain-powered vaccination password has been launched by the State government.

The e-passport, termed Excelsior Pass” is distributed via a voluntary platform that checks for COVID-19 negative results of vaccinations using a QR scanning code. The pass, according to the governor, is intended to check the prevalence of the pandemic in New York. It will also help the process of reopening public places in the city.

A press release from the governor’s office revealed that individuals can store their pass in their smartphones or print it out.

Time Union Center and Madison Square Garden have indicated interest to implement the pass. Other locations are also showing interest to enroll in the program as it expands. The project is carried out in collaboration with IBM, as the company is providing technological and technical support.

Managing Director of public and federal markets at IBM, Steve LaFleche, commented on the project. He stated that IBM is proud to be involved in a project that can help communities “respond positively to COVID-19.”

The plan for the blockchain-based vaccination passport was revealed by Cuomo on March 2, after the system was successfully tested during an NBA game.

The vaccination passport was built on the Digital Health Pass technology of IBM, which is powered by blockchain technology. According to the announcement, it will enable the verification of a user’s test results as well as their vaccination history without revealing any unrelated personal information of the user.

Governor Cuomo also stressed the importance of using technology to find new methods of taking care of individuals while allowing them to enjoy their social lives during this pandemic.

He stated that as important health metrics keep moving downward and more people are being vaccinated, the Excelsior Pass will provide the base for the next step.
