League of Legends Creator Riot Games Unveils Six New Titles and Plans to Dethrone Blizzard

On Tuesday, October 15, gaming development giant Riot Games celebrated the 10th anniversary of its popular video League of Legends. On this occasion, Riot Games games unveiled its big plans for the future with six new titles. The gaming giant plans to take on its competitor Blizzard Entertainment by expanding its highly successful flagship game MOBA.

This couldn’t have been a more opportune time for Riot Games after Blizzard has been under negative news after last week’s Blitzchung ban controversy. To take the lead further, Riot Games has announced six new titles under different stages of development.

This includes a mobile/console version of MOBA dubbed as League of Legends Wild Rift. There is another collectibles card game inspired by the League called the Legends of Runeterra. Another is a multiplayer first-person shooter game codenamed Project A, one is the theme-fighting game dubbed Project L. The last one is an MMO or dungeon-crawler multiplayer dubbed as Project F.

All these titles are basically to extend beyond the confines of its much popular League of Legends while giving it a different dimension.

Resemblance With Blizzard’s Titles

The reason we told Riot Games pitching a straight competition to Blizzard is that each of these above titles is competing against similar ones released by Blizzard. In the free-to-play digital collectible card genre, the Legends of Runeterra will take on Blizzard’s Hearthstone.

Touting Project L as a spiritual successor to Counter-Strike, it has a strong resemblance to Overwatch. Moreover, Riot Games defines Project F as “a project that explores the possibilities of traversing the world of Runeterra with your friends”.

Project F likely could be a co-op dungeon crawler, however, Blizzard already has two titles in this genre named World of Warcraft and Diablo.

In yesterday’s unveiling and announcement, the intentions of Riot Games to poke Blizzard Entertainment were pretty clear. Taking a jibe at Blizzard, Riot Games said ‘Turns out you guys do have phones’ with a direct reference to Blizzard’s disastrous Diablo Immortal announcement at BlizzCon 2018.
