India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Under Heat, as Opposing Party Urges Investigation into ‘Mega Bitcoin Scam’

India’s prevalent news outlet, the Hindu, reported that a member of the Indian National Congress (INC), Shaktisinh Gohil suspects a ‘mega scam’ involving bitcoins. He urges officials to question those involved, which supposedly includes several leaders of the majority party of India, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

According to Gohil, many individuals from the majority party were part of the scam as an effort to conduct money laundering. He further added that the CID or Criminal Investigation Department of Gujarat evaluated the scam and was able to put a price of 5000 crores, which is equivalent to about $720 million. Based on the Hindu’s post, Gohil wants the Supreme Court to take the necessary measures to prevent such crimes from persisting.

It appears that Gohil strongly believes that the members of BJP are using bitcoins to disguise their involvement in money laundering. The first evidence was released sometime in April, as entrepreneur, Sailesh Bhatt made a complaint that dealt with threats asking for ransoms of about Rs 32 crore or $4.6 million.

Bhatt also revealed the member of BJP being, Nalin Kotadiya. His complaint eventually resulted in the arrest of several individuals including Jagdish Patel, who served as the Amreli district police. Unfortunately, figuring out the whereabouts of Kotadiya became tricky, especially when the time of arrest came. Gohil trusts that capturing Kotadiya alone would be enough to trace the entire gang involved.

Gohil does not seem convinced that the Modi government will take severe action, as their interests seem to revolve around lax situations, while missing the big picture. In particular, he shared that, “It is intriguing that the Modi government sends authorities to hound Gujarat Congress MLAs as well as Karnataka Congress candidates during elections […] But it does not bother to investigate this “Mega Bitcoin Scam”.

The Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee recently tweeted out suggesting that the Modi Government fails to bring such a problem to light – keeping many Indians in “dark about such a huge scam.” They further believe that the lack of action of the Modi government’s side might represent their fear of getting caught, ultimately doing whatever so that “they can protect themselves”.
