Crypto exchange BitMEX announces closure amid weak digital asset markets

2026-7-26 13:46

Cryptocurrency exchange BitMEX said on Thursday that it will shut down its operations effective September 23.

The exchange said users' assets remained safe and under their control.

BitMEX said the decision was made by its owner and operator, HDR Global Trading, as part of a strategic review of the business.

The exchange announced the closure in a post on X.

The company also urged users to close their open positions and withdraw their funds before the platform shuts down its operations.

HDR Global Trading announces strategic review decision

According to BitMEX, HDR Global Trading made the decision to close the exchange following a strategic review of the business.

The exchange did not provide further details on the reasons behind the decision in the statement.

However, it told users that their assets remained safe and under their control.

Founded in 2014, BitMEX provides an exchange platform for institutional and professional derivatives traders.

According to information on its website, the platform has more than 2 million traders.

The closure marks a major development for the cryptocurrency exchange, which has operated in the digital asset market since its founding more than a decade ago.

Founders previously pleaded guilty in US case

The announcement also comes after legal issues involving BitMEX and its co-founders.

BitMEX co-founders Benjamin Delo, Arthur Hayes and Samuel Reed pleaded guilty in 2022 to failing to implement an anti-money laundering program that complied with the Bank Secrecy Act.

US prosecutors had accused BitMEX and its founders of willfully violating the Bank Secrecy Act between 2015 and 2020.

The allegations centred on the company's failure to adopt anti-money laundering and "know your customer" programs.

The founders later received pardons from US President Donald Trump last year, as part of his administration's broader policy of looser regulation on cryptocurrencies.

The legal history has remained part of BitMEX's broader operating background as the cryptocurrency industry has faced increased scrutiny over compliance and regulation.

Crypto markets face continued pressure

BitMEX's planned closure comes as cryptocurrency markets continue to face pressure from weak prices, elevated volatility and persistent outflows from exchange-traded funds that track digital assets.

Bitcoin has surrendered most of the gains it recorded last year after Trump was elected as US president for his second term.

Bitcoin was last trading at $65,676, this level represents a decline of almost 50% from its all-time high of $126,223.18 recorded in October last year.

The broader cryptocurrency market has also struggled this year amid heightened market volatility.

Persistent ETF outflows have put further pressure on digital assets, weighing on investor sentiment.

The market environment has created challenges for cryptocurrency businesses as investors have become more cautious and digital assets have experienced sharp price movements.

Investor sentiment hit by regulatory and selling concerns

Trump, who courted crypto donors during his presidential campaign, had promised to support cryptocurrency firms during his second term.

However, progress on US cryptocurrency legislation has been slow.

Concerns over potential bitcoin selling by digital asset treasury companies have also weighed on investor sentiment.

These factors have added to uncertainty across cryptocurrency markets.

The combination of market volatility, ETF outflows, regulatory concerns and potential selling pressure has contributed to a difficult environment for digital assets.

Against this backdrop, BitMEX's decision to shut down its operations adds another major development to the cryptocurrency sector.

For BitMEX users, the exchange has advised them to prepare for the September 23 closure by closing open positions and withdrawing their funds.

The exchange has also sought to reassure users that their assets remain safe and under their control ahead of the shutdown.

The closure follows HDR Global Trading's strategic review of the business.

BitMEX has not provided additional details on the review or outlined further plans for the platform beyond the announced shutdown date.
