‘Block Chains Matter’ T-Shirt Causes Uproar in Crypto Community for Racially Charged Statement

‘Block Chains Matter’ Is this statement racist?

Well , it’s been a buzz of activity on Twitter regarding a t-shirt that was hanging on an office wall carrying the slogan ‘Block Chains Matter’. Some people have come out guns blazing terming the slogan as racist while others feel that it’s just a statement trying to enlighten people on the importance of blockchain technology.

It all started with when Alison Higgins (@Kolor_Koded_101) from Bay Area, Atlanta posted the picture on her page stating that she felt offended by the statement considering she was the only black person in the particular team. Her post quickly picked traction on Twitter which generated some sort of a racial rift.

So I think this was supposed to be funny but as the only black person in this team, I'm finding it pretty hard to laugh… pic.twitter.com/nub8seOalA

‘Diversity Fatigue’

One of the terms that those opposed to the statement kept using was ‘diversity fatigue’ which basically means that the marginalized are tired of working in a system that was apparently built to discourage them to thrive in it. According to Alison, not everyone will find a controversial statement funny and colleagues should be considerate of such remarks.

In her support, Dani Beecham(@danixbeech) urged non-black people to avoid doing such acts and making fun of a statement like’ Black Lives Matter’ which has been widely used to fight racism through the rampant killing of black people. She called such an act stupid and those that did suck.

Non-Black people in tech, don't do things like this. It's not funny, nor clever. It's co-opting a literal life or death movement so that you can be flippant. It sucks. You suck for doing it. End of story. https://t.co/XnYR6dkxNS

On the other hand, some felt that the outrage was uncalled for and was somewhat fake. In a response to @danixbeech, Stop Groupthink(@Stop_Groupthink) asked what the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement has done for the black community. In his opinion, there were actual groups out there who were making significant impact on the black community.

Someone else told those that were offended that there were important things happening in the cryptocurrency space for such a statement to be a topic of discussion. As usual, some opportunists took advantage of the thread to market their airdrops.

All said and done, it seems that the topic of race has found its way into the blockchain space. The irony of the situation is that the idea behind blockchain is to create a virtual world that disrupts the traditional system including racism

This is disgusting. Shame on whoever did this. https://t.co/Wnw7HSED0W
