Scrabble players don’t need to feel worried if they can’t think of a seven-letter word starting with B. A recent update to the official Merriam-Webster Scrabble dictionary has now included “Bitcoin” as a legitimate entry for the game. The update to the dictionary was announced earlier this week when the dictionary publisher added 300 new words that can be legitimately used in the Hasbro board game of Scrabble.

Bitcoin as Merriam-Webster Sees It

According to the official dictionary of the game, “Bitcoin” is defined as a “digital currency.” According to the game’s scoring rules, Bitcoin could earn users at least nine points.

It appears that Merriam-Webster is trying to keep up with the world, by adding several new popular words like “emoji,” “bestie,” “beatdown,” “sheeple,” “facepalm,” “bokeh” and “twerk” to the dictionary. Interestingly, its pop culture references don’t end here. Two-letter words like “Ew” and “OK” have also been added to the dictionary. Alongside these, words like “puggle,” “nubber,” “zomboid,” “aquafaba,” “macaron” and “yowza” have been added too.

The regular unabridged version of the Merriam-Webster dictionary added “Bitcoin” as a word in 2016. According to its website, Bitcoin is in the bottom 10 percent of words as far as look-up stats are concerned.

The Scrabble version is updated less frequently. Its previous update came in 2014, where “Bitcoin” has not yet been included.

Zynga Beat Them To It

Bitcoin was already a playable word in another popular mobile word game app called Words with Friends. The game is designed by Zynga and has also been accepting payments in Bitcoins for in-game purchases since 2014.

At what point does Bitcoin’s mainstream acceptance become proven as it appears in more and more mainstream scenarios. Recently, rapper Eminem also mentioned Bitcoin in his new album Kamikaze. In a track titled “Not Alike,” which features Royce Da 5’9’, a lyric by Royce goes like this — “Remember everybody used to bite Nickel, now everybody doing Bitcoin.”

As mentions about Bitcoin start increasing in films, TV and other media, it is likely that people who have avoided cryptocurrencies to date may have to take a second look.
