The cryptoverse is riddled with countless controversies, hacks, and other big news stories. While enthusiasts are yet to recover from the recent Binance hack and Bitcoin’s massive bull run, Belle Gibson, an Australian influencer, made headlines for performing a one of a kind scam in the crypto-industry.

Gibson recently came into the limelight after the Canberra Times reported her “ill-intended lies to her followers and using her company’s profits to trade cryptocurrencies, futures, and place sports bets.” The influencer was accused of accepting money from her followers under false pretense of being diagnosed with terminal cancer. As a result of the illegitimate claims, Belle was charged a fine of AUD$410,000 ($285,000). While Belle appeared in court on 14 May, 2019 to defend herself against the accusations, the prosecutors said,

“[The documents] reveal a great many transactions overwhelmingly in the nature of discretionary [non-essential] spending.”

While further investigation proved the falseness of her terminal cancer claims, Belle promised to donate AUD$440,000 ($306,000) to various charities and one terminal cancer patient. However, it was later revealed that she only donated AUD$10,000 ($7,000) to charity.
