ARK Core DevNet v2 Launches Amidst a Devastating Price Crash

2018-8-16 18:13

The second version of the ARK Core DevNet went live yesterday. The update reinvents the platform, which is described as an “all-in-one” blockchain that aims to be a simple blockchain development system.

ARK’s developers have made it clear that the v2 hard fork is a complete upgrade that will eventually render v1 obsolete. This release has rebuilt ARK Core from the ground up, and it is beginning to resemble an eventual game-changing mainnet release.

However, v2 is still in the testing phase and is not replacing v1 of the mainnet just yet.

What’s New?

This version has been in development since last November. ARK was originally created with Lisk and Crypti, two existing blockchain platforms. Now, ARK’s code has been rewritten from scratch in order to implement several long-planned features:

ARK Core already runs on a DPoS consensus with delegated block forgers, but block forging will now be contained in an isolated system to prevent possible attacks from affecting the rest of the blockchain. Relay nodes have been made “light and stable as possible,” and users should notice ARK Core’s capacity for more intensive activities. A new feature allows users to communicate with the blockchain via various SQL interfaces.

Several new features and improvements were introduced more recently:

Peer whitelisting and blacklisting, plus a way to find “healthy” peers, were added over the past few weeks. A new desktop wallet was released alongside the DevNet. Over the next few days, a slider to dynamically adjust fees will be added. DDOS prevention was also implemented.

Bad Timing?

The ARK team probably won’t announce a release date for the v2 Mainnet. We do know that it will take some time for the v1 mainnet databases to be migrated, among other things.

But in the absence of a deadline, the community is getting anxious about the project’s future. Yesterday’s release coincided with ARK losing 30% of its value over a 24-hour period. However, the team has assured the community that the project’s current funds, including fiat, “can sustain ARK development for 15-20 years.”

Meanwhile, the community remains devoted in spite of the project’s market value, and a generous bounty program will reward users who submit successful pull requests.
