In February, hackers stole a cryptocurrency worth a total of $35.5 million.

In the second month of 2023, hackers stole a cryptocurrency worth a total of $35.5 million. This is evidenced by the data of the cybersecurity company PeckShield.

In total, according to the service, funds were stolen as a result of 209 hacks, 141 of which occurred on February 11.

$9.2 million is the largest amount that the attackers managed to steal when hacking one project — about 25 MyAlgo crypto wallets on the Algorithand blockchain were affected.

Then there was the hacking of the Platypus crypto protocol, which took about $9 million on February 16. As a result of actions to mitigate the consequences of hacker attack by the Platypus development team and the help of crypto community, some of the funds have already been returned, and the hackers have been arrested by the French police.

Also in February, attackers stole $5.1 million from the Shata Capital cryptocurrency investment project, $3.65 million from the dForce DeFi protocol and $3 million from the Orion Protocol cryptocurrency liquidity aggregator. In addition, they tried to steal $120 million in cryptocurrencies from the BonqDAO protocol, but they managed to withdraw only about $ 2 million.

Analysts also note that the hackers sent part of the stolen funds to the Tornado Cash cryptomixer. Representatives of the PeckShield service identified 9 addresses from which 9300 Ethereum ($15.4 million) and 6000 BNB ($1.8 million) were transferred to the anonymization service.

At the same time, in January, the volume of stolen funds was significantly lower — $8.8 million. The biggest hack in the first month of 2023 turned out to be an attack on the DeFi-crypto lending platform LendHub. As a result of the actions of the attackers, assets worth $ 6 million were withdrawn from the platform.

Viruses created under the guise of desktop versions of the chatbot ChatGPT from OpenAI have become one of the new options for fraud and theft of funds. According to researchers, attackers create websites through which they spread viruses under the guise of desktop version of chatbot ChatGPT for Windows and Android.
