One of the main problems in the blockchain world is related to the lack of interoperability between different networks. However, Accenture has unveiled a new interoperability solution that aims at dealing with the aforementioned issue.

During the Sibos conference that was held on Monday, the technology giant explained that it was able to create an ‘interoperability node.’ According to it, it is able to house the business logic of different blockchains in the market. Some of the enterprise platforms that Accenture would be able to connect are Hyperledger Fabric; Corda, Quorum and Digital Asset.

Quorum, for example, has been developed by JP Morgan Chase and it has several companies working on it. R3’s Corda is also a very famous network that is used by several participants in the market. The same happens with Hyperledger Fabric and Digital Asset.

According to David Treat, global blockchain lead at Accenture said that the first two connected networks were Hyperledger Fabric and Quorum. After these, it was possible to connect R3 Corda and DA. The interoperability nodes allow these networks to be communicated between each other.

On the matter, Treat commented:

“We built the first prototype of an interoperability node to sit in between Fabric and Quorum and got it to work. We have now built one that integrates Corde and DA.”

He then mentioned that although they started connecting these platforms, it is possible to generate a bridge between any combination of these four. Interoperability between these blockchain networks can be used in many industries such as supply chain, trade, finance and many others.

Treat explains that some enterprise blockchains have performed better than others in these side-by-side tests. If there is a transaction that is relevant for both platforms, the two ecosystems can agree to wait and allow the other network to catch up.

Clearly, the interoperability between networks is not unlimited. Accenture’s solution has some constraint to what can be processed between networks.

“On our development pathway, we are exploring the ability to have multiple interoperability nodes to share and spread the load,” commented Treat. “And also a version that would not require a single interoperability node at all, but actually just simply be part of the smart contract logic that any node can run”

Richard Gendal Brown, who works as the chief technology officer at the R3 consortium, said that interoperability is very important to avoid silos of the pasts. He explained that they made specific design choices at the time of building Corda with the intention to ensure an interoperability without friction.
